Morning Girl – the story behind the song

It was 2008. My first divorce had been finalized earlier that year. Aside: it is never good when your divorces are numbered. I was struggling with loneliness and depression — a new experience for me — depression I mean.

And I was missing my wife and our family.

This isn’t about divorce… although, I will likely write about that at some point. And it’s not about depression or loneliness. It’s about a song.

Those who have read my blog(s) over the years know that I am a morning person. Always have been. I feel mornings are a very alive time… and, to be candid, the most romantic time of day.

And so, with a combination of loneliness, longing, and nostalgia, I wrote the following line:

“Morning Girl, the sunlight through the window warms your soft skin where you lay.”

And that line is pretty much the story of my romantic life… 😉 Up early to write — long before anyone else — including the woman of my life. The next line was a natural, given my predilection for coffee.

“Coffee brews. Your breathing keeps the time as I watch quietly for you to wake.”

When I first wrote the song, the line read, “as I wait impatiently for you to wake.”

I first performed the at an open mic in Cave Creek, AZ — at the now closed, Cave Creek Coffee Company (C4). A songwriter in attendance, an older guy whose name I can’t recall — approached me.

“You can be impatient,” he told me, “but you cannot express it as such!”

We talked about the song and songwriting in general. Later that evening, I adjusted the line.

There was another line in the song, in the 2nd verse, that I wasn’t thrilled with. But I went through a period of incredible production and was writing new songs daily/weekly. I didn’t revisit Morning Girl for some time.

Then, a couple years ago, a young lady told me she loved the song, but there was one line that was a problem. I knew immediately what line she was referring to. We talked about it for a moment and she provided the perfect fix. Oddly, it was one word — ONE WORD! But it made the song infinitely better for the listener.

I so appreciate her boldness and willingness to speak up! But, she’s that way… 😉

VERSE 1:
Morning Girl
The sunlight through the window warms your soft skin where you lay
Coffee brews. Your breathing keeps the time as I watch quietly for you to wake

CHORUS:
And you must realize that I’m like a man who’s been hypnotized cuz there is nothing in my world
But me and my morning girl

VERSE 2
Morning Girl
You flash that pretty smile. A lifted sheet invites me in.
Coffee spills, a half-moon pillow stain to mark this moment caught in time

CHORUS:
And you must realize that I’m like a man who’s been hypnotized cuz there is nothing in my world.
But me and my morning girl

VERSE 3:
Morning Girl
Talking skin to skin, laying out the day’s events.
A casual touch, then cares and sheets tossed to the floor, we start our morning dance again

CHORUS:
And you must realize that I’m like a man who’s been hypnotized cuz there is nothing in my world.
But me and my morning girl
