A tribute to the troops for 9/11

Last year, September 10, 2011, I was driving to my daughter’s soccer game. I had never written a song as tribute to the troops or for September 11th. I began writing this during the drive (I know.. writing and driving is NOT the best idea..).

By the time I got to the soccer game, I handed Sara a nearly complete set of lyrics and asked what she thought. She liked them.. and while it might seem necessary for a daughter to like her father’s lyrics, I am pretty certain she was being authentic. I know that I liked how they had turned out.

On the way home, she asked about the music. I told her I had an idea. On September 11, 2011, I completed the music…

I have the original video I recorded one morning plus a very rough pre-mix version from the studio. The song is now in the band’s set list. The complete lyrics can be found below the video..

I hope you enjoy!

Boots on the ground. Dust in the air
Sometimes I wake up at night and think what the hell am I doing here

But day after day I toe the line
Dreamin’ about the girl back home, my family, and those friends of mine

Some days I’m lonely, some days I’m scared
Most days I’m just bored out of my mind
I’ve seen the red glare of rockets, bombs bursting in air
I pray that proof will see me through the night

I’m not trying to be a hero. I’m only trying to survive
This Star-Spangled Life of Mine

My buddies John and Del, both served their time
One is pushing paper down in New Orleans, one is pushing up daisies in Birmingham

I promised them I’d visit. It’s what I hope to do
A promise born of selfishness. I pray to God I make it through

This is for the ones who never make it home
This is for the ones who do but leave something of themselves behind
This is for the prayers of those who wait for the return
The fear, the pride, the worry, and the love….
